The show is an example of the genre known as "Experiential TV", developed by series creator David Conover. The technique has been described by TV critic Tom Shales as "crazily uneventful and thoroughly wonderful."

Man Against Crime, one of the first television programs about private eyes, ran on CBS, the DuMont Television Network and NBC from October 7, 1949 to August 26, 1956. The show was created by Lawrence Klee and Paul Alter and was broadcast live until 1952. It was also directed by Paul Alter. The series was one of the few television programs ever to have been simulcast on more than one network: the program aired on both NBC and DuMont during the 1953-1954 television season.

The premise of the semi-scripted show was that its star, Nick Cannon, a former cast member on All That, would come across a situation he thought needed changing and then "take over" to make things better, or at least funnier. After production and crew changes occurred in the second season, the program suffered from low ratings and was canceled in February 2003. Guest stars on the show included Usher, Mary J. Blige, Britney Spears, Eddie Murphy, Willy Santos, Lil' Romeo, Kenan Thompson, Kel Mitchell and girl group 3LW.
