Until the 11th edition, there was a side rock with the Roman numeral identifying the edition. Now, each show is referred to only by its location.

In reviewing the first episode, The New York Times said the show allows viewers to "observe Ms. Palin observing nature". In 2011, it was announced that the show would not be renewed for a second season. The show was produced by Mark Burnett Productions for Discovery Communications.
