It was taped primarily in Child's Cambridge, Massachusetts house and was aired over four television seasons from 1996 to 1999; it is still occasionally aired in reruns on Create on PBS digital stations. The series was created as a spinoff of the Cooking with Master Chefs series due to a significant response to the baking episodes and was a nation co-production of A La Carte Communications and Maryland Public Television. The accompanying book was written by baker and food writer Dorie Greenspan with assistance from Child and food tester David Nussbaum, and includes brief biographical sketches of the chefs involved in the show.

An article on the series states that it "will follow teams of scientists and explorers as they attempt to unlock the secrets of burial and mummification... Archaeologist Scotty Moore and Discovery Channel Producer Tom Golden from Hot Springs, Arkansas will lead each of Bone Detective's expeditions, which will explore the burial techniques used by some of the world's most ancient civilizations. It is the second entry of producer Jamie Brown's "Quest series", which includes Pioneer Quest: A Year in the Real West, Klondike: The Quest for Gold, and Quest for the Sea. Welcome to Paradox is a science fiction television series aired on the Sci Fi Channel in the U.S. and on Showcase in Canada. Despite being filmed in Canada, the series was broadcast first in the United States. It first aired on August 17, 1998, and ran for one season, ending on November 9, 1998. As this was part of a crop of new shows produced in 1998 by Sci Fi Channel and it was not successful beyond the first season, it was never placed in syndication. Betaville was the original title for the series. The series is an anthology hybrid. The stories all took place in the fictional future city of "Betaville", a nod to Jean-Luc Godard's Alphaville. However, the majority of the stories were adapted from short stories that originally didn't have anything to do with the fictional city. The stories were adapted from older works by famous science fiction authors which explored the impact of certain technologies on the human body and psyche, and the theme of humanity being overwhelmed by hostile technologies.
