It is the fourth of five screen adaptations of the novel of the same name by Caridad Bravo Adams, and the second telenovela. Nelson as USAF Colonel Raynor Sarnac and his family as they navigated the political tensions and military duties of the early 1960s. Heavily promoted during ABC's broadcast of the 1984 Summer Olympics, the two-part pilot aired August 13, 1984. The first episode is related to the U-2 flights over Cuba during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. During production, the plot came to focus more on the loneliness experienced by wife Vanessa while stationed on base and what she and the family would do to spend time in productive pursuits while enduring the Antelope Valley's isolation from civilization. The series, set near Edwards Air Force Base, blended historical events with the challenges of military family life, featuring themes of duty, family relationships, and the looming Vietnam War.

However before long they are both on the run from further pursuers who want their hands on princess Mill. They are only saved when Maze discovers that she has phantom light magical powers and can summon Mills family heirloom mecha. However her performance with the mecha is weak; that is until the sun goes down and she is turned in to a lecherous man. Soon other travellers join them as Maze tries to protect Mill and figure out what she is doing in this fantasy world.

Created by ITC Entertainment's New York offices, the film is a compilation of the original episodes "Shadow of Fear", "Lunarville 7", "Crater 101" and "Dangerous Rendezvous". It complements a previous Captain Scarlet compilation movie, Captain Scarlet vs the Mysterons. The film was negatively received by fans of the original 1960s programme. The movie was later mocked in November 1988 on Mystery Science Theater 3000.
